Tên gọi đèo Pha Đin nguyên gốc xuất xứ từ tiếng Thái, Phạ Đin, trong đó Phạ nghĩa là “trời”, Đin là “đất” hàm nghĩa nơi đây là chỗ tiếp giáp giữa trời và đất.

Những đoạn đường trên đèo kín sương mù. Trên đỉnh Pha Đin, du khách sẽ có cảm giác người và xe đứng trên mây bồng bềnh, phiêu lãng. Nhưng chỉ khoảng 8h30 – 9h là sương sẽ tan hết.

Nơi đây có những bản làng dưới thung lũng bình yên, thơ mộng. Tuy nhiên, khi lên đến gần đỉnh đèo thì hầu như không còn nhìn thấy bản làng nào mà chỉ còn nền trời xanh thẳm và núi rừng hùng vĩ như hòa quyện làm một.

Trên đèo hiện nay có một tấm bia ghi: “Đây là nơi hứng chịu nhiều nhất những trận oanh tạc bằng máy bay của thực dân Pháp nhằm ngăn chặn đường tiếp vận vũ khí, đạn dược, lương thực, thực phẩm của ta phục vụ chiến dịch Điện Biên Phủ”.

Đèo có điểm cao nhất là 1.648 m so với mực nước biển và địa thế rất hiểm trở với một bên là vách núi, một bên là vực sâu.

Lúc lên dốc và xuống dốc, con đèo ngoằn ngoèo với những cung đường cua hết sức nguy hiểm, cùng vô số các khúc cua tay áo, cua chữ A, chữ Z…

Bên cạnh đó là khung cảnh thanh bình của những cánh đồng ngô lá xanh rì. Lúa cũng ngả dần sang màu vàng óng.
